This particular image was meant to more literally represent a passage from the story in which a single tear is mentioned. The upside-down tears falling upwards are from the past while the downward falling one represents her last tear. I purposefully positioned the Abyss lower on the page because of the importance it is to visually show that she isn’t aggressive and imposing. Here she seem more submissive due to her position; Innocence is choosing to give the Abyss what she asked for.
In my personal projects I work with concepts like numbness, bitterness, and/or depression; all states of being I know well. A goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of living in these places—and hopefully help others make better choices than I did. I always believe in hope, even when it seems there might not be any. If there is hope for me there is hope for others; and there is.
